Functional Behavioral Assessment
A functional behavioral assessment is an integral part of the education of many students, especially those who are exhibiting abnormal/unsavory/unwanted behavior. The FBA is part of an ongoing plan of intervention and can be used in conjunction with an IEP and/or 504 Plan.
The Goals of an FBA is to help understand the reasons why the child is exhibiting a problem or multiple problem behaviors, what the problem behaviors are, what is needed to rectify/change/replace the problem behavior, the goal the behavior is supposed to meet and why/when the behaviors become most pervasive.
Participants involved in FBA training will receive all pertinent forms and record-keeping paperwork meant to be used to prepare the FBA with fidelity and thoroughness.
Goals of the FBA
- Help understand the reasons why the child is exhibiting a problem or multiple problem behaviors
- Identify what the problem behaviors are
- Determine what is needed to rectify/change/replace the problem behavior
