FAQs
Who is eligible to join the reading tutoring program?
Children ages 6-12 are eligible to apply for our tutoring programs. We ask that parents who apply have children who need the services. Generally, we ask that your child be at least 3 reading levels behind.
How often will the tutoring sessions take place?
The tutoring program is hosted two days per week, for a total of 2.5 hours per week. Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday and Tuesday and Thursday.
What materials do I need for the tutoring sessions?
Students are only required to be present during tutoring sessions. You are welcome to bring pens and/or pencils. All materials, workbooks, worksheets, writing utensils, laptops, and tablets will be provided by The Orton Gillingham Institute during class.
What happens if my child misses a tutoring session?
We ask that you do your best to ensure that your child is present during all tutoring sessions. Because of the length of the class missing sessions may affect the sequence of learning. We understand that things happen and not all circumstances can be avoided, however, multiple unexcused absences may lead to dismissal from the program.
Can tutoring sessions be done remotely, or are they in person only?
Yes. All Tutoring Programs offered by The Orton Gillingham Institute are available for remote or virtual learning as well as in-person learning.
How long is the free tutoring program?
Each cohort for the tutoring program is either 4 weeks (summer) or 12 weeks (Fall, Winter, Spring) in length.
How long are the tutoring sessions?
Each tutoring session for the tutoring program is 75 minutes or 1 hour and 15 minutes in length.
What is the student/teacher ratio?
No matter if the class is free or paid, each group tutoring class is limited to a maximum of 15 students. Each class contains 2 in-person teachers and 2 virtual teachers including the lead teacher.
Where does tutoring take place?
Tutoring is held in both Guilford County and Forsyth County. You will be provided with the location for tutoring upon completion of the enrollment process and acceptance into the program. Transportation is not provided.
The Orton Gillingham Institute specializes in reading intervention tutoring, assessment, and curriculum development, specializing in Orton-Gillingham, a proven method for aiding students with difficulties in reading, writing, and math. The program is designed to assist students with diagnoses such as Dyslexia, Autism, Dysgraphia, ADHD, and Dyscalculia, among others.
We provide a holistic educational support system, addressing both academic and cognitive development.
Our instructional therapy tutoring services are not just for those diagnosed with learning differences. Any student who struggles with academic performance, and specifically in reading and all of its components can significantly benefit from our specialized approach. Not only are we addressing issues like phonics, decoding, morphology, fluency, writing, and comprehension; but we're also addressing issues like self-esteem, confidence, and group building.
The virtual tutoring program is divided into three levels, catering to a multitude of reading levels and types of reading difficulties. By following a scope and sequence, weekly developed lesson plans, and local and national reading standards we provide an invaluable resource to students, parents, and schools looking to provide or supplement their reading intervention programs.
Our virtual tutoring and testing offers a tangible, scalable, and collaborative reading intervention program; not just random, fly-by-night, 1-on-1 or Small Group Tutoring.
These levels are meticulously designed to address the unique challenges that each stage of reading presents from basic word recognition to more complex sentence structure and comprehension. In developing the virtual programs we've been sure to ensure that students have access to multiple instructors during sessions; and that all students are involved in both individual and group work during live sessions to encourage confidence and camaraderie during live virtual instruction.
